Bird Walks
The Mendocino Coast Audubon Society (MCAS) conducts many birding field trips throughout the year. Details can be found in the Calendar of Events.
Every month two Bird Walks are held at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, led by an MCAS member. These are scheduled year round on the 1st Saturday at 9:00 AM, and the 3rd Wednesday at 8:00 AM, of each month and are held light-rain or shine. For information call 964-6835. An identification guide to the birds of the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens may be down-loaded as an Acrobat file here... A birding checklist may be downloaded here... (If you do not have the free Adobe Acrobat reader, click here to download it). Our Annual November Hawk Field Trip Records Birding forums and Rare Bird Alerts
MCAS and the Peregrine Audubon Chapter developed two listserves for Mendocino County Birding.
A listserv is an automatic electronic mailing list for persons interested in a certain subject. You can subscribe to the list or unsubscribe as you wish. You can receive messages as they are sent, or have a day's messages sent all together as a digest. The two listserves are a Mendocino County Rare Bird Alert, and Mendocino County Birding. There are two lists because of different interests and security levels. Mendocino County Rare Bird Alert (CA-MENDO-RBA)
CA-MENDO-RBA is the Mendocino County Rare Bird Alert E-mail list sponsored by the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society, the Peregrine Audubon Chapter, and the National Audubon Society. This listserve replaced a previous informal rare bird alert mailing list. The purpose is to inform birders about sightings of rare birds in Mendocino County.
Rare birds are those whose status is designated as extremely rare, rare, or uncommon in "Checklist of the Birds of Mendocino County, California," 2nd. ed., by RJKeiffer, 1998. Infrequently, sightings of birds which are not rare but are difficult to locate in Mendocino County will be posted. If you are interested in other aspects of Mendocino County birding, you may wish to subscribe to CA-MENDO-BIRDS, the general Mendocino County birding list. If you are interested in subjects such as collecting and taping debates, debates about cats and birds, bird feeding, bird photography, birding optics, etc., you may wish to subscribe to BIRDCHAT or rec.birds. You can obtain more information by e-mailing listserve@list.audubon.org and putting the message INFO CA-MENDO-RBA in the body of the message. This will give some details about the list and tell you how to subscribe and unsubscribe to the list. Mendocino County Birding (CA-MENDO-BIRDS)
CA-MENDO-BIRDS is a Mendocino County general birding electronic forum sponsored by the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society, the Peregrine Audubon Chapter, and the National Audubon Society.
The purpose of CA-MENDO-BIRDS is to provide a discussion forum for Mendocino County birds, birding, and bird-related activities. This can include announcements from the Mendocino Coast Audubon Society and the Peregrine Audubon Chapter. Appropriate topics include sightings of common birds, questions on identification of birds seen in Mendocino County, birding locations in Mendocino County, new birding resources, and activities of the Audubon chapters in Mendocino County. You can obtain more information by e-mailing listserve@list.audubon.org and putting the message INFO CA-MENDO-BIRDS in the body of the message. This will give you a brief introduction to the list and tell you how to subscribe and unsubscribe to the list. |
