Big River Haul Road Field Trip, Mendocino
Saturday February 8, 2025
8:00 AM – 12:00 NOON
Description: Join us for a trip along the Big River estuary, where we will look for waterfowl in the river, raptors overhead, and mixed songbird flocks in the stands of alder and conifers and in the shrubs along the road. We will also focus on honing our ear birding skills as we listen for birds in the woods nearby, and hopefully we will see some good views of Golden-crowned Kinglets along the way.
This trip will be roughly three miles round trip. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Extra binoculars will be available to borrow if you do not have a pair.
Accessibility: Not ADA accessible. This trip is mostly flat on a maintained dirt road, but access requires a short narrow section that bypasses the main gate.
Directions: We will meet at 8:00 AM at the small parking lot at the end of the dirt road leading
East from the Big River Bridge on the North side of the river, just before the locked gate.
Trip will be canceled in the event of heavy rain.
