Usal Beach Campground located in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park may turn out to be one of the most productive ‘vagrant traps’ Mendocino County has to offer.

This long, narrow section begins at Highway 1, MM 70.00, on the north bank of Ten Mile River, and follows this state route north for 13.5 miles. At the mouth of Hardy Creek, Highway 1 leaves the ocean behind as it winds inland and ends at Highway 101 in Leggett.

California State Parks - Mendocino Headlands

This section covers the north half of MacKerricher State Park and includes about 5 miles of Highway 1.

"...This is private land bisected by a public road which ends at a driveway. Bird from the road only. Watch for raptors, especially Ferruginous Hawk; search any Canada Goose flock for other species.

The Mendocino Coast Audubon Society holds two monthly birdwalks at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens. The walk on the first Saturday of every month meets at 9AM and is geared toward novice birders. The second, which is held on the third Wednesday of the month, meets at 8AM (April through October) or 8:30AM (November through March).

They will be joining tens of thousands of birders across the Americas who will brave the uncertain weather (or stay home and watch a feeder) to count every bird of every species they can find in one day, as part of the annual Christmas Bird Count.

On Monday, December 27, bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, armed with binoculars, bird guides, and checklists, will try to count all the birds they can identify from Little Valley Road to Big River
