This fall, I strongly encourage you to visit the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, a part of which is located next to Interstate 5. Here you can see hundreds of thousands of geese, swans, ducks, and even Sandhill Cranes and their young.

There is frequently fine shorebird viewing from the beach parking lot. Across Highway 1 lies the main body of Van Damme State Park. There is a parking fee to park within the park. Look for the flock of Gray Jays that resides in the park.

Usal Beach Campground located in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park may turn out to be one of the most productive ‘vagrant traps’ Mendocino County has to offer.

This long, narrow section begins at Highway 1, MM 70.00, on the north bank of Ten Mile River, and follows this state route north for 13.5 miles. At the mouth of Hardy Creek, Highway 1 leaves the ocean behind as it winds inland and ends at Highway 101 in Leggett.
